The Social Enterprise: Empowerment Initiatives for the Indigent Youths and Women was born as a ministry of outreach to the needs of the youths and women from indigent backgrounds who were deprieved, disadvantaged or miss-match in opportunity to achieve their potential in the society. It adopted the framework of vocational training skills, offer educational scholarships and micro-business supports to help progressive beneficiaries/trainees build capacities and jumpstart their business with seed grants/starter pack kits.
This initial launch began in 2023 using the NCWR platform and the Dominican Order where i belong as a Religious in the North-west region of Nigeria. My target audience are mainly youths between the ages of 18-35 years and women who are vulnerable, socially and economically. As an accelerator , it got sponsorship from the Conrad hilton Foundation on the strategy opportunity: Sisters-Led Youth Empowerment Initiative program to train 150 youths and also from the Global Solidarity Forum on the program: ENHANCING SUSTAINABLE LIVELIHOOD: EMPOWERING YOUTHS THROUGH SKILLS DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM EXPANSION (YESADE) to train 110 youths across the six geo-political regions in Nigeria.
This program was able to cover an extended outreach through the Network Animators who act as “foot-soldiers” and monitoring units at the grassroot. Reports are transmitted digitally and social media platforms like whatsapp, program email box, was created to correspond/communicate/share ideas and feedbacks from centre supervisions periodically.
On the other hand, the program equally encountered challenges of high insecurity disturbances, especially in the rural settlement and Northern regions, no subsidy to cover trainees transportation and sometimes accomodation for safety domicile, youthful distractions and managing attrition. MOU was used to engage each service provider/centre to keep them on course.
Finally, as part of monitoring, evaluation and learning experiences, we propose strong need for workshops and seminars to engage alumni, use tell your story experience to animate trainees after training and to share unique ideas and best practice with experts through internships and hands-on. In effect, overall impact observed is high sense of dignity in labour, improved livelihood, community leadership position and build self-confidence.
Annunciation Convent School is a Combined primary School for boys and girls situated in ibex Hill Lusaka Zambia. It was established in January 2017 by theHandmaid Sisters of the Blessed Virgin Mary. As a congregation serving in the Catholic Church in Zambia, one of our main apostolate is to provide quality education to children from both vulnerable and financially stable families. However, Annunciation convent school is taking a shift to embrace more of the vulnerable children to enable them have equal opportunities in assessing quality education which will further improve their livelihood and reduce poverty. To effectively implement this initiative there is need to source for funds to expand the school with new classrooms and other related facilities.
In addition, the school plans to introduce feeding program were children will have to be provided with food two times per day, that is breakfast and lunch. To achieve this cost effectively, we intend to cultivate one of our farm land with crops that will enable us provide the food to the children while they are in school. Instead of buying everything from the market. This will equally require resources to buy farming inputs. The effective implementation of our social enterprise will respond to more than three SDG which include, to provide quality education, reduce poverty and hunger.
Our social enterprise was established in 2023. We have a coffee plantation in Kyegengwa. From time to time I travel to monitor it’s progress. Right now it is doing quite well. Our mission is not only to provide aid but to create sustainable solutions that uplift communities and restore hope.
Our project is on broilers layering. It started on June 2024.The project was prompted by a gap where we learn a technical school which caters for vulnerable youths in the society. The school not been able to cater for their training period we felt we need to get a sustainable project that can be able to offer scholarship to the disadvantaged youths.so our project we have chicken meat as a product, manual…after the sales we are able to sponsor students…last year since inception we had two students, this year 2025 we have enrolled two more…so in total we have 4 students under (SBVP) with one sitting for her national exam in April after since now she is out for attachment.
In the farm we have trained two men who are fully employed in the project to take care of the chicks since day one (they are from the local community)By this their families are assured of a bread on table.
We too have casuals who too get an assurance whenever we are harvesting the birds .
We have been able to improve health as from the students we have one who is sick and we try to check on her diet to maintain the immunity as well as following her medication closely.
In the market too we are cutting down the high demand of the supply of the broilers though at a smaller percentage, that’s why we wish to add the number a..and this will also help us to sponsor more disadvantaged youths.
My farming work started in May 2022 with the plantation of cassava, yam, and vegetables, which I used to help and improve our community food. We have enough land that can give us at least food that can sustain us for three months. I later started doing cassava food business to get some money that will enable us to buy other foodstuffs for the community. My interest is to improve our small poultry farm to generate income for the community.
