The African Diaspora Network’s (ADN) unwavering commitment to engaging, informing, and activating the diaspora has been instrumental in building bridges and creating countless opportunities across the globe. While the full impact of our work may take years to realize, the journey itself—and the feedback we’ve received along the way—has been profoundly inspiring.
During UNGA week in NYC, I encountered numerous individuals who told me how ADN has touched their lives. Many would begin by saying, “You may not remember me, but we met at the African Diaspora Investment Symposium (ADIS),” or “I participated in one of your accelerator programs,” or even “We crossed paths at an event years ago.” Each of them had a personal story to share, reinforcing my belief that our vision to unite Africans and friends of Africa has been right on target. These interactions testify to ADN’s role in fostering meaningful connections that spark change.
It is no surprise that more organizations are now stepping up their efforts to integrate the African diaspora into their strategies. This growing recognition of the diaspora’s role in advancing Africa’s development is encouraging and essential. After all, addressing Africa’s challenges and harnessing its vast opportunities require the collective efforts of all of us working together across sectors and continents.
In that spirit, I’d like to share a few key takeaways from this remarkable UNGA week, which reinforce ADN’s commitment to long-term impact:

- Public-Private Partnerships: These partnerships are pivotal for Africa’s sustainable development. Collaboration between governments, private enterprises, and civil society is critical to unlocking the potential for economic growth, infrastructure development, and technological advancement across the continent.
- Investment and Philanthropy: Going Beyond Remittances: The diaspora’s role is evolving beyond sending remittances. Strategic investment and philanthropic initiatives can support communities and entrepreneurs and drive development in ways that create lasting change. We must focus on giving wisely, ensuring funds are used for transformational purposes.
- Access to Energy: According to Power Africa, over 600 million Africans still lack access to electricity. This poses a significant barrier to progress, particularly in digital inclusion and the growth of AI technologies. Reliable energy is the foundation upon which Africa’s technological future will be built, and addressing this issue is urgent.
- Women’s Economic Inclusion: Women’s contribution to Africa’s prosperity is the untold story. Investments in women’s education, entrepreneurship, and leadership will unlock tremendous potential, driving inclusive growth and sustainable development. Women are the backbone of many African economies, and their empowerment benefits their families and entire communities.
- Creative Industries: Sports, Entertainment, Fashion, and Music: Africa’s cultural and creative sectors are booming, with the continent’s music, fashion, sports, and entertainment industries gaining global recognition. These industries have the power to reshape perceptions of Africa, generate jobs, and contribute significantly to economic development. We must continue to support and promote Africa’s creative talent, ensuring they have access to global markets and opportunities.
